Make your travel reservations to Aeropuerto José Joaquín de Olmedo (GYE) in the city of Guayaquil. American Airlines offers two daily nonstop flights from Miami and Latam offers 1 non-stop from JFK.  Other airlines like Avianca or Copa have one-stop flights from several US and Canadian cities.  KLM, Iberia, and Latam offer services from Madrid and Amsterdam.

From the airport to Salinas it is a two-hour trip. Ground transportation will be available to all competitors and visitors upon request, for a fee.

There are also some rent-a-car companies at the airport if you prefer to travel on your own. Google Maps and Waze works well so if you decide to take this option you won't get lost.

Salinas is a small town that thrives on tourism. You may get around town walking but taxis are available and they are cheap. In the “Malecon” you will find all sorts of food joints, souvenirs, bars and nightlife. If you need to shop for groceries or clothing there are two large supermarkets and a shopping mall.

There are many sightseeing opportunities like the “Chocolatera” and the “Mirador”. If you have a day to spare a trip up north on the “Ruta del Spondilus” has great sights, beaches and seafood.

Lest we forget, people come to Salinas for its beaches! The SYC is surrounded by white sand and crystal waters, we are sure you will find the time to enjoy them.

The founding vision of Kapawi Ecolodge and Reserve is to create – in one of the most remote environments in the world – a haven of ease, good taste, and understated luxury.

To this end, skilled Achuar craftsmen came together to build a series of comfortable cabins in the vernacular style of the rainforest, a raised boardwalk connects all of the guest’s cabins and the several large communal buildings at Kapawi, all of which rest on stilts around the edge of an ephemeral lagoon crowded with plant and bird life.

Salinas is blessed with kind weather throughout the year. Temperature starts “changing” in November, and we should expect a range from 27°C during the day to 22°C at night. Water seems cold for us at 24°C but will be quite comfortable for most visitors!

Wind conditions average 8-12 knots most days and may go up to 15 if the sun shines early. We sail in a protected bay where wind blows 230-250° regularly across the Salinas Peninsula so chop is moderate. Wind sets at around 1pm so we never start racing earlier!

Don’t drink water from tap and stay away from raw seafood and you will be fine!

Food at the SYC is prepared to high standards so you are safe eating there.

In Salinas, there are many restaurants listed in Trip Advisor that you are welcome to try. Any brand of bottled water is safe.

Aside from sailing equipment (clothing, tools, spares and sails) you are going to find quite anything you need. It is always safe to bring in excess of your favorite solar protection. Also, you will find well-stocked drugstores but do bring your personal medicine.

All information, both official and non, will be posted at the Salinas Yacht Club website.

In the meantime feel free to explore Ecuador, Guayaquil, Salinas and its surroundings in your favorite travel (and weather!) sites.

  • The SYC will be the official importer of boats coming into Ecuador.
  • The SYC will provide the guarantee for temporary importation of boats.
  • 3 – 4 Boat containers may stay in the SYC property during the event. If there are more, we can keep them on an offsite property close-by.
  • The SYC has capable personnel and forklifts on-site to handle the maneuver of unloading containers.
  • Containers should arrive in Ecuador no later than three weeks before the regatta.
  • The SYC will provide as best as possible an area for storage of covers and shipping material.

If you need assistance chartering a boat for the worlds, please contact Juan José Ferretti.
